Linear
actuators are used to move various loads. It can convert energy into linear
motion and run on pressurized fluid or electricity. This post looks at the main
advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic, pneumatic and electric linear
actuators.
Hydraulic
linear actuator:-
The hydraulic linear actuator uses a piston cylinder
configuration. The in-compressible liquid in the pump moves the piston towards
the cylinder. As pressure increases, the piston moves linearly within the
cylinder, creating a linear force. The spring or fluid return force is supplied
to the opposite side, returning the piston to the retracted position.
Advantage
of Hydraulic Linear Actuator:-
- The hydraulic actuator can maintain a constant force without the pump supplying more fluid due to the use of an in-compressible fluid.
- Hydraulic actuators can generate very high forces.
- It can generate high speed.
Disadvantages
of Hydraulic Linear
Actuator:-
- Hydraulic fluid leaks reduce efficiency. It can also
cause cleaning problems.
- Many accessory components are required, including
fluid reservoirs, pumps, motors, discharge valves, heat exchange's, and noise
reduction equipment.
- High maintenance system. Many components are
constantly monitored.
Pneumatic
linear actuator:-
Pneumatic actuators work similarly to hydraulic actuators,
the difference is the drive fluid, not the hydraulic fluid. The gas is
compressed in the piston cylinder configuration, creating a linear force.
Advantage
of Pneumatic linear actuator:-
- The pneumatic actuator is very simple and most aluminum cylinders have an optimal maximum pressure rating that allows for an optimal range of force.
- Pneumatic actuators are often used at extreme temperatures due to the safety of using dangerous chemicals or air instead of electricity.
- It is a cheap option.
Disadvantages
of Pneumatic Linear Actuator:-
- Due to pressure loss and air compressibility,
pneumatic devices perform less than other linear motion methods. The compressor
must be kept running to maintain operating pressure even when no movement is
required.
- Pneumatic actuators are efficient when dimensioned for
a specific task. This requires proportionally sized valves, regulators, and
compressors, which increases cost and complexity.
- Air can become contaminated with oil or lubricants,
leading to downtime and maintenance.
Electric
linear actuator
Electric linear actuators convert rotary motion to linear
motion. Rotational motion is first generated by an electric motor. The gearbox
reduces this high-speed rotational motion, increasing the torque that will be
used to rotate the lead
screw. The acme drive nut moves in a straight line when the lead screw is
turned. I think it's like putting a screw into a piece of wood, but instead of
a screw moving towards the wood, the wood will either face the screw or move
away from the screw depending on the direction of rotation.
Advantages
of Electric Linear Actuator:-
- Electric actuators provide the most accurate control
positioning.
- Expandable for any purpose or requirement
- Easily networked and programmable. Instant feedback
for diagnosis and maintenance is provided.
- The system provides complete control of movement,
providing custom speed, stroke length, and applied force.
- Quiet than pneumatic and hydraulic actuators.
Disadvantages
of Electric Linear Actuator.
· The initial cost is more expensive than pneumatic and hydraulic actuators.
· Pneumatic actuators are dangerous and safe in flammable areas, but they are not suitable for all conditions.
· Electric motors can be big.
